“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17
For years when I proclaimed I believed in God but not the God in the Bible, this verse was the hardest one for me to accept. And, although I didn’t know it then, it was the most important one for me to understand. Only with the help of the Holy Spirit was I truly able to understand how great a love it takes to give one’s only begotten Son.
I used to say, “Well, if God is so all powerful and can do whatever he wants to do, then why didn’t He just have Jesus thrown in prison or He could have died of old age and then been resurrected.” When I saw a meme with Jesus nailed to the cross and blood streaming down from His side and agony on His face, I used to scroll right by and try not to look. I didn’t want to face the agony He went through. But, now, I look at those memes because that is love. Jesus himself said, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13) Sometimes I look for just a moment. It is painful for me because I love Him and what He did for me. And why did he die on that cross? So that you and I could have eternal life.
If you love and cherish Him, then, you will truly feel Him loving you back. Believing in Jesus, wanting your sins forgiven, and asking is all you have to do to have eternal life because of His love. And as you grow as a Christian and get deeper into his Word, you will love Him more and feel His love in return.
