Dare to Hope

Lamentations 3:21-23 image

Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:21-23

When things are going all wrong in your life, do you dare to hope?   Have you had a time in your life when you thought all was lost?   In these verses the I is Jerusalem after the captivity,  and she is bemoaning all the things that have happened to her and thus to her residents and the Jewish people as a whole.   But, in verse 3:21 Jerusalem dared to hope.

Sometimes, when we speak of how bad things are or were,  we end up saying well you just don’t understand how awful it really was.  Let’s look at just three prior verses to see how bad it was for Jerusalem.

He has made my skin and flesh grow old. He has broken my bones. He has besieged and surrounded me with anguish and distress. He has buried me in a dark place, like those long dead.  Lamentations 3:4-6

I have to say that I don’t think I have experienced any of that other than breaking two bones in my finger.  There is a lot more sorrow in Lamentations and yet she “dares to hope.”  She is not ready to give up and pull the blanket up over her head. And why?  Because she remembered something about God’s love.

God’s Word says that his love never ends.  He is faithful and his mercies last forever starting afresh every morning.  That is amazing.  What a terrific fact to put your faith and hope in.   He will never stop loving you even if you sin.  He will always have mercy for you and every morning his mercies start over.  This is a very comforting verse, well worth memorizing and bringing to mine when things seem almost unbearably and you can’t seem to see any hope for the future.  Reading all of chapter three might help at these times, too.

There is always hope.  And the most important is hope in our salvation. Verse 24 in this chapter says  “The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!” If you are a child of God you will reign with Jesus.  That is the inheritance.  You will live forever, and your heavenly home will be perfect.   If you are not a child of God I strongly urge you to ask God to forgive you of your sins and to save you.  Your part is to have faith that God is the father of Jesus Christ and only through faith in Jesus can you have eternal life.   Find a church or talk to a born again Christian and ask him/her what you need to do.  They will clear up any questions you may have.
