We know how much God
loves us , and we have
put our trust in his love.
1 John 4:16
Do you know how much God loves you? Do you feel his love? Being a Christian means having an intimate relationship with our Savior Jesus and with God and with the Holy Spirit. If you wonder if God could love even you, take a look around you. Look at the beautiful world he created for you that yields everything you need to sustain yourself. Look at what wonderful cures, he has and keeps putting into men’s and women’s minds to create drugs and strategies to heal you. He is an amazing God and scripture says nothing can separate you from his love. (Romans 8:39) He loves you with a love that forgives you your sins and wipes the record clean. (Hebrews 10:27) His mercy for you is renewed every morning. (Lamentations 3:22-23) And, he gave his only begotten Son, so that you might have eternal life. (John 3:16) That is love! And it is yours when you trust Him.
Let’s look at more of what John said. We know how much God loves us , and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love, live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect.
1 John 4:16 -17
The Apostle John says that because of this love, he and the other disciples have put their trust in God. You need to trust him, too. Make him King if your life. Turn over your life to Him and follow Him trusting that He will make everything work out for your good. (Romans 2:28)
Then the apostle wrote “God is love and all who live in love, live in God, and God lives in them.” This is where many literalists get stuck. No one can live inside someone else, they might say. Well, no, except in a sci-fi movie where someone takes over someone else’s body, no one can literally live inside your body, but this isn’t just anybody, this is God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Some say God lives in your heart, your spiritual heart. That is nice to contemplate, but may not help that literalist. Really, it is about our actions. If God lives in us, if his Word is alive within us, and He is always with us, then when we deal with someone we can deal with that person with God’s love. There is nothing that God’s love can not conquer. Psalm 53:8 says “But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God’s unfailing love.”
Then, in our study verses, John writes, “And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect.” If you have read 1 Corinthians, you know that love is not just saying I love you. It is quite a tall order, actually, one we all fall short of at one time or another, but the good news is if we live in God, reading His Word, following His commands, our love will grow more perfect. Another amazing miracle. It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen. And, by loving God and living in Him, you will be able to love closer and closer to love’s requirements: “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable , and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 And, as a nice benefit, this is the way God loves us.
I pray that our heavenly Father will help you to understand these verses and that you will trust Him and love Him. I pray that you will be blessed by having your ability to love be perfected. Please father let the reader of this post feel your love today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
