Human Schemes

Saul recognized David’s voice and called out, “Is that you, my son David?” And David replied, “ Yes, my lord the king.  Why are you chasing me?  What have I done?   What is my crime?   But now let my lord the king listen to his servant.  If the LORD has stirred you up against me, then let him accept my offering. But if this is simply a human scheme, then may those involved be cursed by the LORD.

1 Samuel 26:17-19

Are you a schemer?  I remember the phrase  “he is scheming up something”  in relationship to a certain friend of mine. In fact,  we often called him the Deal Maker. And his schemes were definitely not from God.  In fact, they often called for giving up or losing your values if you decided to become part of one of his schemes.  Saul had an even bigger scheme.  He was plotting to kill David.

The words from David to Saul in 1 Samuel 26 come after Saul has been trying to kill him for some time.  David had been forced to live a life of exile hiding from Saul. Saul out of jealousy and a deranged mind, has pursued him relentlessly. He knows God has abandoned him (Saul)  and God’s blessings are on David. The human scheme of Saul is to kill David, so that he can remain as king and his sons after him. It isn’t for the good of all,  but for the good of Saul.  As I think back to when I as a teenager, I don’t think I ever realized that our Deal Maker wasn’t interested in what was good for me or our other friends, but only what was good for him.

But human schemes do not stand a chance against God’s word. Proverbs 3:5-6 states
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” When we follow the schemes of men we set out on a very crooked path that leads us away from God’s blessings. But, of we follow God’s plans we will have a straight path.

Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”   We need to trust in this promise.  Our future is with God in heaven.  Don’t be moved by human schemes.  My Deal Maker and most human schemers make their schemes sound so good.  The rewards they propose for following them include wealth, comforts, love, and respect, but if they are not God’s plan they will fail. They don’t give you a real lasting future and hope.

Pray that you will have discernment to discover the difference between human schemes and God’s plans and that God will give you plans for your welfare and to a future and hope.
