2 Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob,
Jacob was the father of Judah…
16 Jacob was the father of_______
the__________ of Mary. Mary gave
birth to Jesus, who is called the
Messiah. Matthew 1:2 & 16
How would you fill in the blanks? If you read the Matthew 1:2-16 you will read all the ancestors of Jesus starting with Abraham. But, when I got to the 42nd generation, I thought it would be Joachim the father of Mary. But, surprise to me, it was Joseph, husband of Mary. Immediately, my 2016 brain said, wait, he was the step father, not a blood relation. So I had to rethink this one. Obviously, as usual, God’s ways are not our ways. How many times had I heard someone say or said myself, “Well, but he isn’t a real relation. Really, he is no relation at all.” Now, I have to reorganize my thinking. If Joseph completes the link from Abraham to Jesus, then being a step parent takes on a new meaning. In most states the man who is married to the woman when a child is born is legally responsible for the child unless someone proves otherwise. I imagine this was handed down from the ideas from the Bible. I like this surprise.
And, I have found a number of surprises in the Bible. If someone had left off some words, I would fill in with the wrong ones. Then, when I ponder the real words I almost always feel blessed by the new understanding.
This section is dedicated to surprises in the scriptures. I have listed some below that you might be interested in.
